Kurt (age 35), Allison (nearly 5), Emily (2.25), and I live in the heart of Boulder, Colorado. We recently moved down the hill after seven years of mountain living. Now we are 6 blocks from Allison’s school, 4 blocks from Kurt’s office and darn close to a lot of places. We love riding our bikes most everywhere. Today Allison said, “Daddy, I haven’t been in the car for a really long time.” “Bliss,” says Mommy! We love where we live and only wish the Grandparents were on the route of our evening walks (they are all in California so we’ll have to expand our radius over time).
Kurt is a numbers guy (CPA). He currently is the Director of Finance at Leave No Trace, a national non-profit based in town that advocates outdoor ethics and provides environmental education to every age possible. He’s a huge outdoors boy. He’s the kid that has taught me to take life less seriously, enjoy the moment, live. Play comes first in his life. I call him “antic boy”, as we’ll be on a nice family walk down a winding dirt path and he’ll go missing for a moment and we look back to see him 15 feet up a tree.
Allison is our blondie. She’s about to start the big K (kindergarten) in the fall. She loves her school now and all the girls she is with. Allison is an artist and lover. She is the best one to take care of her little sis! She has taken wildly to her bike since our move to a paved world. The other day she finished her bike ride (which she likes to take 3-6 times a day), dropped her bike at the top of the driveway and took off running. We looked at her funny then realized she was doing exactly what she sees Mommy do so often. A brick…Bike-transition-run. Time to get that girl some good running shoes!
Emily is just over 2, potty trained herself (“No diapers, Mommy!”), and we call her our family ‘ham’. She makes us laugh until our cheeks can take no more. Ask her to give you her best double fish hook. On bike rides where Allison is riding her single bike, Emily likes to pull her bike. But, you know who ends up with it. Tonight, helmeted and all, we left her bike at our house and she ran the entire loop chasing her big sister on the bike.
